Hold On Tight: Exploring the Limits of Engineering with a Shake it!

Each team will be given the required materials to build structures to construct a highly stable structure with a design of their choice that satisfies the given criteria under the given time. This structure will then be tested on a shake table and evaluated. The most creative team will be selected for the subsequent rounds.

Format

Round 1: 45 minutes

• 40 one feet sticks will be provided per team.
• Minimum height of the structure should be 3 feet.
• Minimum number of cross bracing should be provided.
• The structure should contain maximum 4 columns only.
• The structure will be tested on the shake table for minimum 1 minute. General Criteria:
• Plywood base provided should be used for both first and second rounds.
• The columns provided in the first round should be used again in the second.
• A4 sheet, hacksaw, hammer, nails, nail remover, pencil will be provided to the participants.

Round 2: 90 minutes

• 10 two feet sticks and 50 one feet sticks will be provided per team.
• Minimum height of the structure should be 5 feet.
• Minimum base area should be 1X1 feet.
• The structure should contain maximum 6 columns only.
• The structure will be tested on the shake table for minimum 1 minute.
• Weight will be hanged on top of the structure and tested for minimum 1 minute.
• The contestants should provide a provision on top of the structure to hang the weight. The weight will only be hanged on top of the structure. General criteria:
• Plywood base provided should be used for both first and second rounds.
• The columns provided in the first round should be used again in the second.
• A4 sheet, hacksaw, hammer, nails, nail remover, pencil will be provided to the participants.

Rules

• It is a group event.
• A team may consist of 3–4 members.
• Participants must report at the venue at least 15 minutes before the commencement of the event.
• Contestants who come late will not be given extra time.
• Mobile phone or any other electronic gadgets should be switched off/in silent mode during the event.
• Event will be of 3 rounds.
• Each round will have different criteria that will be announced on the spot.
• Teams who do not follow the rules will be disqualified.
• Participants must not communicate or disturb another team during the event.
• The constructed structure will be tested and evaluated by judges and the best teams will be promoted to next round.
• The most creative and talented team will be awarded.
• If any tie is there between teams, special round will be conducted.
• Competition head/coordinator has the right to disqualify any team in any case.
• Judge’s decision is final.
